How to insert an internal link to a help article
Insert internal links to help articles using the Insert Link dialog, which automatically updates when titles, slugs, or domains change.
An internal link points to another help article, or to a section of it, and keeps working even if that article's title, address slug, domain or language changes later. You can only add links while the article is writable. The formatting toolbar isn't shown while the agent is still generating the article, if generation failed, or on a fresh scaffold you haven't started writing. Translation previews are read-only.
Open the Insert link dialog
-
Open the article you want to edit
Open your Help Center from the navigation, then open the article from its article tree or find it with the command palette. For an overview of the editor, see "How to use the help article editor". -
Place your cursor or select text
In the article body, click where the link should go. You can also select the words you want to turn into the link. -
Click "Insert Link"
In the formatting toolbar above the article, click "Insert Link". The "Insert link" dialog opens on the "Help article" tab by default. If it opens on "Web address" instead, click "Help article" at the top right of the dialog.
Pick the article and destination
-
Search for the article
Type part of the article's title, or its identifier, into the "Search articles" field. The list under "Articles" narrows as you type and shows how many articles match. If nothing matches, you'll see "No articles match "…"". Leave the field empty to see all articles. -
Select the article
Click the article you want to link to. The "Insert link" button stays disabled until you've selected one. Once you select it, the pane headed "Sections in {article title}" fills with the places the link can jump to. -
Choose where the link lands
- "Top of article": opens the article at its beginning.
- A heading: the rows below "Top of article" are the article's headings, indented by level. Click one to make the link land on that section.
If the article has no headings, you'll see "This article has no sections", so the link goes to the top.
-
Set the link text (optional)
Leave "Link text" blank to use the linked article's title. The field's placeholder shows that title. Type something only if you want different words on the link. -
Click "Insert link"
Click "Insert link" at the bottom right of the dialog. The dialog closes and the link appears in the article body with your text or the article title. If you're editing an existing link, the dialog opens with the linked article and section already highlighted, and the button reads "Update link". If that link's section no longer exists, the section is still listed but marked "heading not found".
-
Save the article
The new link is an unsaved edit until you save the article.
In the published Help Center, the link opens the article in the language the reader is currently using, and section links land on the chosen heading. A link to a section of the same article scrolls within the page. Any other internal link opens in a new tab. If you use Print / Save as PDF from the print preview, internal links are converted to the article's own path with the section anchor, so the printed or saved copy still points to the right place.
