Edit an article's SEO description

You can customize the meta description that appears in search engine results for any article. This description is managed from the article editor's settings sidebar.

Edit the description

1. Open the article editor
   Open the article you want to edit in the article editor.

2. Locate the SEO section
   In the right-hand settings sidebar, scroll down to the "SEO" section near the bottom.

3. Edit the meta description
   Click inside the text field and type your description. A character counter below the field shows your current count against the recommended 160-character maximum. If you exceed 160 characters, the counter changes color to warn you.

4. Save your changes
   When your text differs from the saved value, a "Save" button appears next to the character counter. Click it to save your description. The button shows "Saving…" while the request completes.

Clear the description for automatic backfill

1. Remove all text from the field
   Delete everything in the meta description text field so it's empty.

2. Save the empty value
   Click "Save" to confirm. Saving an empty description marks the field for automatic backfilling, which means the system will generate a new AI-written description during a future background run.

Regenerate the description with AI

1. Click the Regenerate button
   Click "Regenerate" next to the character counter. The button shows "Generating…" while the AI creates a new description based on your article's content.

2. Review and save
   Once generation completes, the new text appears in the field. If you're happy with it, click "Save" to keep it. You can also edit the generated text before saving.

Generated descriptions use your Help Center's configured formality and addressing style settings.
